We’re all excited about the coming solar eclypse, foreseen on August 12, 2026, around 8 PM! Europe had not been experiencing one in the last 30 years… it’s a big event.

In Venice, the Sun will be 91.2% obscured, offering a striking spectacle just before dusk. Here is the expected schedule: 7:27 PM: Start of the partial eclipse (the Sun is at an altitude of approximately 8°). 8:19 PM: Peak of the eclipse (91.2% obscuration), with the Sun now resting on the horizon. 8:23 PM: Sunset, with the Sun still partially eclipsed.

Where are the best places to enjoy this exceptional sight in Venice? You need to choose a location with a completely unobstructed horizon towards the west-northwest (WNW), as the event will take place at sunset with the Sun very close to the horizon line.

For instance, Fondamenta delle Zattere and the Giudecca: located in the historic center, these broad promenades offer expansive views of the basin and the western horizon (you should look towards Marghera). Otherwise, you may head at the very West end of Cannaregio district, near Baia del re, and look towards the ponte della Libertà.

Otherwise, a Public Event on the Lido: At Riviera Corinto (behind the Lido roller skating rink), the Venetian Amateur Astronomers Association is organizing a free guided stargazing session starting at 7:00 PM, featuring telescopes and protective eyewear.

Safety note: even though the Sun will be 91% obscured and very low in the sky, the remaining light can damage the retina. Never view the event with the naked eye or ordinary sunglasses; use only glasses certified to ISO 12312- standards.
