Patere, what are they?

Have you ever noticed, when hanging around in Venice, strange bas-reliefs above the front doors? Have you ever wondered what they are?

They're called PATERE and they're a typical feature of Venetian architecture, be it religious or civil. They're originally from the 10th Century and they're a decorative motive of houses and churches in the Venetian lagoon area.

They often reproduce animals and they are considered one of the richest bestiaries handed down and visible on the facades of houses in Venice. The most common subject is the eagle catching a hare: the eagle, symbol of virtue, triumphs over lust represented by the hare.

The most ancient ones are presumably in calle dei proverbi, in Cannaregio, but there are also some modern ones, inspired by the archaic models.
