We’re now in 2026 and for the third year in a row Venice municipality has been applying the entry fee in Venice, a measure with the aim to discourage daily visitors, or at least to make them responsible for caring of the city.
Be it an effective method or not, we’re not here to discuss about it, but it’s true that the coexistence of the entry fee and the tourist tax has been causing, since its first introduction, some confusion in visitors and guests. In this post we’re trying to explain it in the simplest possible way, hoping to be of help.
The entry fee for Venice in 2026 is applied to all daily visitors on 60 days within the year, between April and July. This year, it will be demanded on: April 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 and from 24 to 30; May 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31; June 1 to 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28; July 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26. You pay this fee directly to the Venice municipality, through the dedicated website.
There are some exemptions even for daily visitors, for instance if you come to Venice for work, studying reason, for medical care, if you own a property in Venice, if you come to visit a resident and a few other cases.
Tourist tax, on the other hand, is applied all year long to all guests who are staying at least 1 night in any registered accommodation in Venice (hotel, tourist rental apartments, b&b…), the fee varies according to the kind of lodging and you pay it to your host, who will later transfer it to the Venice municipality.
You won’t pay both, so if you booked a tourist rental apartment and you pay the tourist tax you don’t have to pay the entry fee, too. How will Venice municipality know that you’re paying tourist tax, since you don’t pay it directly to them? You have to register to the dedicated website, indicate your details and your accommodation and and download the exemption QR code, which you can show, should you meet any controller in town.
When you book a tourist rental unit with Luxrest Venice, we email you a detailed message with all of the instructions to download your exemption QR code. But remember: the exemption code is for the entry fee, not for tourist tax! You won’t pay both, but you have to pay one of the two.
